The Northwest is not only a majestic, poetic and dangerously breathtaking attraction of immense forests and terraced fields, but also a preserver of treasured folklores formed, maintained and developed for thousands of generations.
The people of the Northwest have long been living and developing diverse indigenous cultures in the high mountains adjoining cool streams. Each ethnic group bears unique characteristics in the cultural flow of the Northwest. In the process of creation, dwellers of highland ethnic groups had contrived humanistic conceptions and turned them into applicable traditions & customs in their lifestyles. Just like that, the folklore of ethnic groups/villages becomes imbued with morals formed over long periods of time.
Ethnic groups in the Northwest live in Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Son La, Hoa Binh, Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Thanh Nghe Mountain. In the valleys is where the inhabitants of Thai, Muong, Lao, and Lu dwell in. The mountainsides are home to Mon-Khmer-speaking peoples such as Kho Mu, Mang, Khang, and Xinh Mun. Lastly, the highland is populated by the Mong-Dao & Tang Mien.
Northwestern culture has been established and built upon for thousands of years while still retaining its indistinguishable identity. The characteristics of Northwest folklore are reflected in the field of performance art. One might be surprised by the fact that Northwest folklore needn’t be learned in written materials, but through the area’s festive activities as well. Therefore, folklore firmly connects the community, blending the cultures of each ethnic group into a colorful display of collective beauty.
However, in the era of technological advancements, traditions have been through considerable wear and tear. As of today, cherished customs of the past seem to exist only in the memories of the past generation.
