DIFFICULTIES ETHNIC MINORITIES ARE FACED WITH

The Covid-19 pandemic is having a great influence on our socio-economic life, especially in the field of tourism. This phenomenon is seen most clearly in a famous tourist attraction: Sapa. Ethnic minorities, which are considered vulnerable, are also an integral part of the tourism services chain. Sapa is a region of beautiful scenery, mild climate, diverse culture whose unique identity was only further built upon by willing participants in the booming tourism culture such as H'mong and Dao. We can observe ample types of community-based tourism here where villages not only get a chance to express their pristine beauty to the world, but also receive economical security in return. It is these villages, the foodservice businesses, and the famous attractions that successfully grasped the attention of tourists, as well as changing the lives of dwellers in Sapa.

The outbreak of Covid-19 has, unfortunately, hindered the flow of tourists, especially international visitors, to Sapa. Nearly all service businesses in various communities had to close their doors. Traditional handicrafts, agricultural products, and cuisine that are originally served to tourists can no longer be consumed. In that context, the negative impact of Covid-19 on ethnic minorities in Sapa is enormous. Previous activities in tourism services such as food, transportation, and customer care must now be suspended. It can be said that along with the tourism business in Sapa, the people here are also severely hurt. Life from now will inevitably be more difficult; their income will be almost nothing; and their access to other services will be significantly reduced. The children, too, will be unable to go to school…

Witnessing the current economic state of the Northwest during the Covid-19 pandemic, we think it is imperative to each make a small contribution and subsequently form a “spillover effect” in our community. Ethnic minorities in that Northwest region are trying very hard to overcome the harsh nature of life, so either a material or a spiritual contribution, no matter how big or small, will certainly mean a lot to these people.
