Since time immemorial, ethnic minorities have always been considered barbaric, antiquated and ignorant people. At times they’re even referred to as "primitive people". They are faced with baseless and misleading prejudices, and to this day, those disparaging views still exist.
So where are these prejudices from? We’d say mostly through social networking sites, with sprinkles throughout our daily life.
It is insanely often that one comes across observations such as "Although he is from an ethnic group, A is very good at studying", or "B is from an ethnic group, but he is very smart at studying" (Excerpt from “Tia Sang” newspaper). Unsurprisingly, the advent of social networking sites also contributes to the ethnic minorities being greatly underestimated. Hundreds of Youtube channels and advertisements constantly provide false/offensive descriptions of ethnic peoples to not only attract public attention, but to derive profits from them as well. “A series of channels such as A Hy TV, Bao Bao Film, May Thanh TV… feature videos that are judged by the online community as being "ridiculous, falsely reflecting the identity of ethnic peoples, reeking of prejudice and discriminatory undertones…" (Excerpt from Tienphong.vn newspaper)
Besides, their life is also overly romanticized through deceptive photos. Surely everyone has seen a smiling photo of an old woman with a familiar ethnic costume - there must be thousands of other photos with the same exact pose. Over time, the only images that show up on the search engine when the word "ethnicity" is entered are bright smiles, cute children, a perfect world, in stark contrast with the harsh nature of their condition.
While we acknowledge that many people are still fighting to give ethnic peoples a fairer life, the aforementioned prejudices aren’t even close to being fully eradicated, whether unintentionally or not.
